ACADEMICS

I enrolled at the University of Houston Honors College as a math major in 2018. Since then, I have found great success academically, holding a 3.89 cumulative GPA and making Dean's List every semester of my university career. As a sophomore, I decided to diversify my university education by committing to a minor in leadership studies.

MATH MAJOR

A math major is a lot less about numbers than people tend to think. What studying mathematics mostly entails is writing proofs - a method of reasoning that involves deriving conclusions from axioms using airtight logical techniques. Ultimately, this is one of the things that drew me to study math. As a debater and a scholar, mathematics has trained me to deftly spot contradictions and logical inconsistencies in arguments. Not only has studying mathematics given me the opportunity to truly understand why mathematical systems function the way they do, but also it has provided me a toolkit with which I have used to become a better thinker across the board.

At the University of Houston, a math major has to pick a specialization. I chose data science. To me, this was an obvious choice - I had always had an interest in it, using rudimentary techniques to try and improve at my hobbies. This specialization means that I have developed a proficiency in computer science, notably with python, R, and machine learning models.

A python script I wrote to preserve formatting while merging multiple Microsoft Word files.

LEADERSHIP STUDIES MINOR

At the beginning of my university career, I decided I was not going to fall victim to standard pitfalls of a STEM major. Namely, I planned to ensure that I would have exposure to a diverse set of disciplines and that I was an experienced writer. To this end, a leadership studies minor was a perfect fit.

Leadership studies is a multidisciplinary field that looks at how leadership functions and how leaders impact society. This means that I am educated in everything from leadership techniques and methods to the intricacies of mass psychology. As the president of debate, this has been incredibly beneficial to me. As I've learned academically what I leader ought to be, I've learned through experience how to become one.
